Challenge

Greek life students at FGCU had no centralized way to discover, organize, or track campus events, making participation feel fragmented and causing many to miss important activities.

Approach

Design a centralized event management feature that brought event discovery, RSVPs and attendance tracking into one place to simplify participation.

Existing App Design

Research

To validate the gap, I conducted usability testing with Greek life students to better understand how they currently found events, managed attendance, and tracked participation requirements.

Key insights from testing

  • Students relied on group chats and word of mouth to find events

  • Students frequently forgot upcoming events because they were using multiple tools

  • Attendance expectations and missed-event penalties were difficult to find

  • Students wanted one place to manage upcoming, attended, and missed events

Existing Tools

Design

Using these research insights, I designed an events hub that simplified event discovery while making attendance requirements and participation status easier to understand. The solution focused on reducing cognitive load and helping students stay engaged throughout the semester.

What guided my design process

  • Make upcoming events immediately visible

  • Reduce cognitive load by organizing events into clear states

  • Increase accountability by surfacing attendance status

  • Encourage participation through personalized recommendations

Results

Due to startup constraints, this feature development has been delayed so live usage metrics are currently unavailable.

However, usability testing with interactive prototypes and existing users revealed strong positive feedback around the calendar view, roll call functionality, attendance tracking, and event detail experience.
